| J. F. Dougherty, merchant firm of
Dougherty & Carter, was born in the city of
Philadelphia, Penn., in 1855. In 1856 the family came to
Iowa and settled in Allamakee County. His parents, James
and Bridget Dougherty, are natives of Ireland, who
immigrated to the United States in about 1850, and the
subject of the sketch was reared on a farm until May 6,
1878, when he entered the store of W. C. Earle, where he
clerked one year; then formed a partnership with J. F.
Ronayne and engaged in the boot and shoe business. In
1881 the firm dissolved, and Mr. Dougherty associated
himself with Mr. Carter, and the firm is now doing a very
fine business in boots, shoes, gents' furnishing goods,
etc. pg 487 |
