Bakewell - Morgan - Phillippi

Catherine (nee Hostert) Phillippi
Catherine (nee Hostert) Phillippi

Above is a picture of my great-great-grandmother Phillippi (nee Catherine Hostert). Her death certificate, April 25,1915, states that she died of bronchitis, birthplace 'Germany', father's name John Hostert, mother's name 'unknown'. The certificate was signed by Mrs. John Bakewell.

From a letter written by Mathias 'Matt' F. Bakewell on May 26, 1919 from Trier, Germany to his mother, Magdalene (Phillippi) Bakewell, at Lansing. At the time Matt was a member of the Army of Occupation: "I talked with some people here by the name of Phillippi; but they do not know, of course, of Grandfather who left here 74 years ago." According to that, Michael Phillippi would have departed Trier in 1845, however, his obituary reflects the time of emigration to be 1855-56, after his marriage to Catherine Hostert in Chicago.

Pictured left -right: Mike Donovan, Michael William Bakewell (1881-1952), Francis Bernard Morgan (1880-1968), Arthur James Bakewell (b. 1899 ), William Bakewell (1856-1941) & Mathias Francis Bakewell (1889-1973).

The picture was taken at the farm of William  & Magdalene (Phillippi) Bakewell outside of Lansing about 1917.
My grandfather Francis Bernard Morgan farmed the Morgan homestead out side of New Albin on Iowa River Rd (county rd A26) past the Morgan Bridge until his retirement and the farm was sold.
