McLaughlin Family Album

William McLaughlin and Honor Gavin were said to have been married in 1848, the same year he (supposedly) immigrated. They may have been married in Ireland, aboard ship, or somewhere in New York. William was a native of County Mayo, Ireland and Honor might have also been from there.

Honor died at age 35, in 1864. On the right is a photo of Honor (Gavin) McLaughlin's headstone in Dorchester Catholic cemetery. A larger photo of this tombstone & inscription can be viewed at the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project.

William married second Margaret Danaher.

Josephine McLaughlin (1879-1963) was the daughter of William McLaughlin and Margaret Danaher. She was a real estate agent in Minneapolis during a time when women rarely held such jobs. The late Mildred (Burke) Hall, a cousin, wrote that Josephine would visit her Hanover township family "in her furs and finery." Josephine never married.

McLaughlin homestead on the Iowa River, ca 1909

William 'Donald' and Mary 'Bernice' play in the yard of this home. Donald's wife wrote this caption on the bottom of the photo: "The old McLaughlin homestead on the Iowa River", but Raymond Burke, who visited the McLaughlin farm on the Iowa River many times, said that was not the house. So, I'm not positive whose house this was or where it stands/stood. (click the photo to enlarge it in a new window)
