As with any undertaking of the magnitude of Dale
Woodmansee's book "Allamakee County, Iowa Burial Grounds
1845-1988 ", there may be errors, omitted or
conflicting information, or descrepancies. The information on
this page has been contributed by Allamakee County researchers.
The intent is to assist others by alerting them to possible
errors, omissions or descrepancies in the book; as well as
providing additional notes from the submitter.

Larson, Etta
-notes: This surname is actually Lawson.
I'm guessing the same for Etta but her stone is sunk so
far into the ground I'd have to start digging with a
shovel. Sarah's I don't know, there is a chunk of
stone that could be her, she's buried near Etta.

Sept. 3, 1868 in French Creek. He was not 90 years old,

It is easy to see how 'Woodmansee' made the
mistake on the last name was wrong. It is just west of my

first name and the dates 1900-1922. East of the

daughter of Thomas Whalen and Elizabeth Shortt Whalen,
was the second wife of a John H. Connor. The 1925
census indicates that his first wife was Esther Ward (her
daughter is in John's household and Esther is named as
her mother) But I couldn't find her in Woodmansee's

That would put her birth Nov. 18, 1868. Minerva Jane
Burton is her mother, she died 9 days after giving birth.
Then little Minnie died 9 days later. How sad...

notes - last name on the 4 above is Caton, not Gaton.
I found a stone for Phebe but it is in poor shape, I
think it reads daughter of Chester & "R"
Caton. Age 5 mo. Chester Caton was married twice.
Phebe was his 1st wife & Rosetta, according to her
headstone was his 2nd wife. So if Phebe is the daughter
of Chester then her last name is Caton & not
Gaton. 1st wife Phebe died in 1861, two years
before little Phebe was born, so she had to be the
daughter of Rosetta.

first name is: Augustin (no "E" on the end)

Marsh, Jane note - Most of the
stone is gone but is says she was the wife of Joseph
Marsh. Wondering if she isn't the ?, Jane that Woodmansee
has listed.
Kaeser, Elizabeth note - She's on the
other side of the same stone as John Kaeser. John's last
name is spelled Kaesers (with an "S" on the end
& Elizabeth is just Kaeser)
Berrier, Marian note- There is a metal
monument of some Marsh's. There are Marsh's on the base
of this monument on 3 sides. Marian is on the 4th side.
Margaret Nicolson note- She died March

Biggs, David
Biggs, Elizabeth
-notes: Woodmanseee has David Biggs' date of death listed
as March 25, 1914 in Maple Hill. However, David is living
with two of his daughters & a grand daughter in
Jefferson twp. in the 1920 census, so he obviously can't
be dead. Woodmansee has Elizabeth, David's wife listed as
dead on May 16, 1924. She does not appear in the census
with David and his daughters, and he is shown as a
widower. So...... I think Woodmansee transposed the dates
of death for David and Elizabeth. David probably died on
the date that Woodmansee has listed for Elizabeth and
vice versa. Positive affirmation of these dates would be
great

our surprise, found a 9 month old son is buried with him.
The writing is in German, so only someone who could read
it would know. The baby's name was Franz Sales (Ebner)

comma key on the keyboard, so this is either a typo in
Woodmansee or a transcription typo. Mary Jane is
buried in plot 409 with other people named Bearce.

Jackson ? - Oakland Main
-notes: An infant born & deceased 19 Aug
1932 with only the surname Jackson - might be George S.
Jackson's grandson, Robert Edward Jackson who died as an
infant sometime between 1928 and 1935. I have
written to the Martin Funeral home and the Waukon library
for more information.

Stevens, Samuel L. -
Oakland Main
-notes: Mr. Woodmansee transcribed the tombstone
of Samuel L. Stevens as: born 31 Oct 1895 and died 10 Nov
1896. According to this record it would appear that
Samuel L. Stevens was 1 year old when he died. This is
definitely NOT the case. In 1999, I traveled to the
cemetery & found the stone sunken into the ground, so
the inscription was unreadable. Jan Miller assisted me in
pulling up the tombstone & leveling it. Amazingly,
the lettering that was buried under the ground was very
well preserved. There is no birth date recorded on the
stone. Additionally, W.P.A. Grave Records of Allamakee
co. transcribed the dates as: 1829-Nov 10, 1886.

Stillman, John J. (9/2/1809-2/20/1893) -
Oakland Main
-notes: All records I can find list him as John,
except for the WPA records (John N.). The Co. B
12th Ia Inf is not him but his son John J. (from the John
Stillman (1809-1893) obituary, Arthur T. Stillman bio in
the 1913 Allamakee co. bios)

Stillman, John J. (3/14/1840-2/15/1862)
- Oakland Main
-addition: A listing for John J. Stillman
(3/14/1840-2/15/1862) is missing from the Woodmansee book
and has no dates in the WPA list. John J.
Stillman's tombstone was stolen many years ago, probably
before the WPA transcriptions. It was found near
McGregor in Clayton County, Iowa several years ago.
It was returned to Oakland Main, Lot 84, in a ceremony on
October 24th, 2004. The tombstone inscription reads
"John J. son of John & Mary E Stillman:
Fell at Fort Donaldson while nobly defending his Countrys
Flag. Feb 15, 1862. Age 22 years. A
member of Co. B. 12 Regt Iowa Volunteers."
There is no record of when and how John J. Stillman's
body was transported to Waukon from Tennessee, if in fact
it was transported there. There are 670 Union
soldiers buried in the Fort Donelson National Cemetery,
512 of them unidentified.
