I'm guessing the same for Etta but her stone is sunk so

Sept. 3, 1868 in French Creek. He was not 90 years old,

first name and the dates 1900-1922. East of the

Connors, ? ;(Mrs. John); 1877 Jan

-notes: I've found out that an Anna M. Whalen,
daughter of Thomas Whalen and Elizabeth Shortt Whalen,
was the second wife of a John H. Connor. The 1925
census indicates that his first wife was Esther Ward (her
daughter is in John's household and Esther is named as
her mother) But I couldn't find her in Woodmansee's
entries for St. Mary Cemetery, Lycurgus. But there
is a Connor whose name is unknown and it notes that she
is "Mrs. John". That could possibly
be Esther Ward Connor.

-notes: John Fenelon & his wife Mary Brennan Fenelon
are buried in St. Mary's Lycurgus, but neither name

Mary's obit has been posted on the Allamakee co. Obituary
Board. Their headstones read:

Harkin, Bridget 1827-16 Nov 1882
age 55 years
-notes: Bridget Harkin is in the 1880 census with John
Harkins and her two stepsons James and Barney, brothers,
I assume, to the Neil mentioned in the obituary. She is
listed as being 82 years old. Her obituary is dated a few days after the
funeral, so would appear that the date of death was
November 10, which is the Friday before the obit was
written. Her date of birth would be closer to 1797 than
1827.
-submitted by Matthew Whalen
Whalen, John - NM Lot 33
-notes:
John Whalen with no marker in Lot 33 at Lycurgus
has a strong possibility of being the son of
Thomas Whalen (brother to my great-grandfather
Patrick Whalen) and Elizabeth Shortt Whalen.
According to the 1880 US Census he was born in
1872 but in the Iowa State census years 1885
& 1895 his age indicates that he was born in
1874/5. His Funeral Mass card (right) gives birth
date of March 14, 1879, which is likely not the
correct year. A few of Thomas and Eliza Shortt
Whalen's sons went west to Idaho. I had assumed
John may be one of them. I know they traveled
back to Iowa to visit family, especially the
unmarried brothers. Although John's funeral card
doesn't specifically give burial place, it would
appear he was buried in Allamakee County, because
the Mortuary was Bakke and Toner, which was in
Waukon in the 1940s. John's parents and siblings
are buried in Lycurgus (as were his Whalen and
Shortt ancestors and cousins), so Lycurgus
cemetery is the most likely cemetery. The only
other John Whalen listed in Woodmansee
is John Henry Whalen buried at Wexford, a member
of an unrelated family. If there is a record of
the sale of Lycurgus Lot 33, that may be helpful. |

That would put her birth Nov. 18, 1868. Minerva Jane

Then little Minnie died 9 days later. How sad...

Mar 02 - 1863 Aug 02
notes - last name on the 4 above is Caton,
not Gaton.
I found a stone for Phebe but it is in poor shape, I
think it reads daughter of Chester & "R"
Caton. Age 5 mo. Chester Caton was married twice.
Phebe was his 1st wife & Rosetta, according to her
headstone was his 2nd wife. So if Phebe is the daughter
of Chester then her last name is Caton & not
Gaton. 1st wife Phebe died in 1861, two years
before little Phebe was born, so she had to be the
daughter of Rosetta.
Steadman, Betsy Jane; 1821 -1864
May 28
note- Last name spelled Stedman on stone. Death date is
May 18th & not May 28th of 1864.
Steadman, Augustine L.; ? - 186-
note- his name is spelled Steadman on the stone, but his
first name is: Augustin (no "E" on the end)
Stuart, David; 1862 Dec 30 - 1864
Aug 10
note - more than likely his name is actually David Stuart
???, with his surname being 'unknown'. His name is on the
same stone as May Augusta, who is probably his sister
(see also Augusta, May)
Makee cemetery burials omitted from the

Marsh, Jane note - Most of the
stone is gone but is says she was the wife of Joseph
Marsh. Wondering if she isn't the ?, Jane that Woodmansee
has listed.
Kaeser, Elizabeth note - She's on the
other side of the same stone as John Kaeser. John's last
name is spelled Kaesers (with an "S" on the end
& Elizabeth is just Kaeser)
Berrier, Marian note- There is a metal
monument of some Marsh's. There are Marsh's on the base
of this monument on 3 sides. Marian is on the 4th side.
Margaret Nicolson note- She died March
12, 1862 aged 20 yrs 6 m & 11 days. On the opposite
side of the same headstone is Robert Reed.
Wonder if they were related somehow? He died in 1863.

Biggs, David
Biggs, Elizabeth
-notes: Woodmanseee has David Biggs' date of death listed
as March 25, 1914 in Maple Hill. However, David is living
with two of his daughters & a grand daughter in
Jefferson twp. in the 1920 census, so he obviously can't
be dead. Woodmansee has Elizabeth, David's wife listed as
dead on May 16, 1924. She does not appear in the census
with David and his daughters, and he is shown as a
widower. So...... I think Woodmansee transposed the dates
of death for David and Elizabeth. David probably died on
the date that Woodmansee has listed for Elizabeth and
vice versa. Positive affirmation of these dates would be
great

-notes: When we were there in 2003, we found the grave
site of my husband's great-grandfather, Kasper Ebner (the
headstone reads Caspar Ebnar). We cleaned it off and, to
our surprise, found a 9 month old son is buried with him.
The writing is in German, so only someone who could read
it would know. The baby's name was Franz Sales (Ebner)
and the headstone spells Franz with a "t" in
it, ie: Frantz. The baby's burial is not recorded in
Woodmansee. The inscription under the age is:
"Sleeps near his father". The father, Kasper,
died February 22,1861. If the baby Franz died near the

son of Ebenezer Dains of NJ, PA & Ohio. Suspect
he moved to IA from WI with a relative.

Stevens, Samuel L. -
Oakland Main
-notes: Mr. Woodmansee transcribed the tombstone
of Samuel L. Stevens as: born 31 Oct 1895 and died 10 Nov
1896. According to this record it would appear that
Samuel L. Stevens was 1 year old when he died. This is
definitely NOT the case. In 1999, I traveled to the
cemetery & found the stone sunken into the ground, so
the inscription was unreadable. Jan Miller assisted me in
pulling up the tombstone & leveling it. Amazingly,
the lettering that was buried under the ground was very
well preserved. There is no birth date recorded on the
stone. Additionally, W.P.A. Grave Records of Allamakee

before the WPA transcriptions. It was found near
McGregor in Clayton County, Iowa several years ago.
It was returned to Oakland Main, Lot 84, in a ceremony on
October 24th, 2004. The tombstone inscription reads
"John J. son of John & Mary E Stillman:
Fell at Fort Donaldson while nobly defending his Countrys
Flag. Feb 15, 1862. Age 22 years. A
member of Co. B. 12 Regt Iowa Volunteers."
There is no record of when and how John J. Stillman's

it was transported there. There are 670 Union
soldiers buried in the Fort Donelson National Cemetery,
512 of them unidentified.
