By 1870, James Boots and his brother Thomas, both veterans of the War Between the States, were living in Clayton County, Iowa. James married Augusta Harriet Park and Thomas married Jane Hewitt Park, the daughters of Elkader pioneer blacksmith Asa Griffin Park and Eliza Malissa Welch.

After Jane’s death Thomas married Emma Helen Scheffert (1859-1935), daughter of John Christian Frederich Scheffert and Augusta Christine Fredreka Minmum Meder.

James was 14 when he enlisted in the US Army and 18 when he was discharged. He was captured on his way to Atlanta to join Sherman’s Army and sent to Andersonville Prison Camp where he spent three months toward the end of the war. He and Augusta were the parents of seven children:

Mahale Marie Boots who died young

Warren Samuel Boots and Augusta Alitz were the parents of nine children:

Ira John Boots who married Pearl Irene Essick
Samuel James Boots who married Zelma E. Record
Carol Marie Boots who married Arnie Waldeman Sandbeck and after his death married George Allan Edwards
Clarence Frederick Boots who married Grace L. Lange
Ramon Charles Boots who married Greta E. Lenth
Jessie Mae Boots who married David E. Hoover
Bessie Faye Boots who married Raymond George Florence and later Major Jens Brarud Wold Jensen
