By 1870, James Boots and his brother Thomas, both veterans of the War Between the States, were living in Clayton County, Iowa. James married Augusta Harriet Park and Thomas married Jane Hewitt Park, the daughters of Elkader pioneer blacksmith Asa Griffin Park and Eliza Malissa Welch.
After Janes death Thomas married Emma Helen Scheffert (1859-1935), daughter of John Christian Frederich Scheffert and Augusta Christine Fredreka Minmum Meder.

James was 14 when he enlisted in the US Army and 18 when he was discharged. He was captured on his way to Atlanta to join Shermans Army and sent to Andersonville Prison Camp where he spent three months toward the end of the war. Bessie Faye Boots who married Raymond George Florence and later Major Jens Brarud Wold Jensen
