They lived on a farm near Postville, Allamakee Co. Iowa. Grandson Robert writes of his grandfather: "All the things about Grampa Alvin are from my Mom's recollection. He was short and bald and had green eyes. He was a real hard working farmer with lots of milk cows, hogs, and chickens. Grampa Alvin was very strict and had a hot temper. But Mom says he did have his tender moments. Sometimes when it was cold and the snow was deep during the school year Grandpa would get the blankets out, hitch the horse to the bobsled, and take the kids to country school. One of Grandpa's favorite things was to home butcher, usually he butchered a beef steer and a pig at the same time." and of his grandmother Minnie, he remembers: "Grandma worked outside alot. They had alot of chickens for eggs and for meat. Actually Grandma was taller than Grandpa and had black hair and blue eyes. Grandma used to cook on an old wood cookstove. She had a huge garden and a large raspberry and strawberry patch. Since Grandpa loved to butcher it became Grandma's responsibility to take care of the meat. She canned most of the meat in jars. Because Grandma never learned to drive a car, she was dependent upon her husband to take her to town (later on she could depend upon her sons). Grandpa did not mind taking Grandma to town, especially the grocery store. Grandpa had a sweet tooth for ice cream and his sons and grandsons inherited it." Alvin died May 26, 1947 in IA, at 53 years of age. He died of a heart attack while out in the fields on his tractor.Wilhelmina Meyer died as a result of a car accident while returning home with two of her children from a family Thanksgiving in Postville on November 25, 1948. Two of her children, Arthur and Marie were also killed in the accident. Alvin and Wilhelmina are buried in the Postville cemetery. Alvin Meyer and Wilhelmina Kuhse had 5 children: |
